SOTM: Russell Chung

As everyone settles in for the start of the school year, orchestra once again begins to nominate a Student of the Month, someone whose dedication and passion for music serves as an inspiration to others within the Arcadia Orchestras community. This year, junior Russell Chung kicks off the program as September’s Student of the Month! 

As a violinist in Symphony Orchestra, Russell is both a great team player and a leader, who can always be seen actively participating. His consistency in practicing, refining, and mastering the violin has led to his fellow students describing him as their “role model.” 

Russell’s interest in music began at a young age when he was just three years old, and would only continue to grow from there. His parents are both musicians, having met each other in an orchestra, and provided an environment that helped foster a love for music. Additionally, Russell’s grandmother played an important role in motivating Russell to pick up an instrument. 

“Both of my parents played the violin, and my dad was really good at it,” explained Russell. “When I was little, he was performing somewhere, and my grandmother encouraged me to learn the violin to be like him. Being around three, I agreed, but didn’t start until I was almost seven.” 

Since then, Russell has stayed committed to the violin, finishing CM 10 last year and earning an Achievement in Certificate of Merit. As a standard for musical excellence, the Certificate of Merit program involves evaluations in performance, technique, ear training, sight reading, sight reading, and music theory. Taking years to earn, an achievement in Certificate of Merit is a hallmark of musical distinction and serves as a testament to Russell’s hard work and dedication towards the violin. 

Outside of music, Russell enjoys playing baseball and programming. By being able to balance these extracurriculars while excelling in both orchestra and academics, Russell is a source of inspiration for other student musicians who wish to pursue their passions.
