Every month, Arcadia Orchestra students nominate a classmate that has demonstrated leadership, passion, and commitment to our music program. Please join us in celebrating sophomore violist Austin Ng as this October’s Student of the Month (SOTM)!

Austin first began playing viola in fourth grade when he joined his  elementary school orchestra because he felt it was a unique instrument. He thought the violin was too competitive, while the cello and bass were too heavy to carry. This decision has led him to join our school’s orchestra program, where he plans to continue playing throughout his high school career.

“Music has been a big part of my life. It’s helped me meet so many new people, and allowed me to grow closer to my family,” Austin says. His grandfather plays the traditional chinese instrument èrhú, and Austin thinks fondly of the times when he would perform for him and make him smile. “It has also taught me patience, hard work, and confidence in my own abilities,” he continues. Years of dedication to an instrument takes special determination and passion, which Austin demonstrates daily during rehearsals.

Besides devoting himself to his music, he also enjoys hanging out with his friends in orchestra and performing at concerts. His favorite piece so far is “Fantasia on a Theme from Thailand”, which he played for the Fall String Concert last year.

As Orchestra Council’s Premier Social Chair, Austin helps plan exciting socials and events for our students. He takes care of general announcements for fourth period Premier, keeping our students updated on upcoming fundraisers, activities, and performances. He especially enjoys the community and friendships that being on OC brings.

Outside orchestra, Austin is involved with many extracurricular activities on campus. He is a dedicated athlete in cross country, and a member of the Music Makes Miracles Club and Hope Can Cure Cancer. In his free time, he enjoys playing games, listening to music, and painting.

When asked for any closing thoughts, Austin shares, “I’m really excited for the Winter Concert. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working on this semester!”

Austin’s classmates appreciate his dedication for orchestra and his enthusiasm for the viola. Congratulations again to Austin for being this October’s Student of the Month!
