Every month, the Arcadia Orchestras community nominates one hard-working, diligent, and passionate musician as the Student of the Month (SOTM). Please join us in congratulating freshman cellist Maya Gao as this year’s first recipient of the SOTM award!

Fun fact: Maya has a cute fat cat named Toby!

Maya joined orchestra because she’d been playing music since she was young and wanted to be a part of the orchestra “family” to meet new people, perform in concerts, and work towards her musical goals. She has already accomplished one of these goals by becoming the first chair cellist in String Orchestra!

“I picked the cello because I really liked the sound of it”, Maya says. “I had previously played violin but did not like it since it felt too high-pitched for me. I’m really glad I switched to cello because it has a really rich, smooth, and deep sound that I like a lot better, and I think cello songs are very pretty”.

Music isn’t the only thing Maya enjoys, however. Outside of school, she loves art, pottery, reading, running, traveling, hanging out with friends, and trying out delicious foods! This all supports the fact that her favorite orchestra event thus far was Music Camp, where she was able to meet many new friends and participate in the exciting activities. She especially appreciates listening to Vivaldi, particularly his violin concerto, “The Four Seasons.”

When asked about what music had taught her in her time as a musician, she says, “I think music teaches you to persevere and be consistent since the only way to get better is to practice consistently and work through parts even if they are difficult. I think it has impacted me a lot and helped me hopefully become a more well rounded person!”

Despite being only a freshman, Maya has made a significant impact on the orchestra community with her dedication and incredible leadership skills. As she continues her journey in music, she would like to extend her thanks to the people around her for their continuous support and show her appreciation for becoming the first SOTM. Congratulations once again Maya!
