SOTM: Alex Cheng

Writer: Sabrina LoSabrina Lo

Although the new year has just commenced, one student has made an impact on other orchestra students with her kindness, friendliness, and willingness to help others. Please congratulate String Orchestra cellist Alex Cheng on winning the January Student of the Month!

Alex has been involved in music “since forever,” as she described. She started playing piano when she was 5, crediting the instrument for introducing her to other instruments. In 4th grade, she chose the violin but decided ultimately on the cello in middle school. When asked why she chose the cello, Alex shared that she enjoys the “warm tone quality and range” of the cello. “By using your whole body to play the instrument, I feel like I have more control but also a safe space and connection to the music”.

Even for those who aren’t in orchestra, Alex’s contributions are prominent through the physical and digital posters advertising Orchestra concerts, fundraisers, and other events. Alex is a member of Orchestra Council (OC) and serves as the graphic designer.

“I was inspired to join OC because I was able to combine both my love for orchestra and my creative mind to one role,” said Alex. “I love making the posters and using my other skills to help benefit the program.”

Orchestra Council is just one of many reasons that Alex enjoys being a part of the Arcadia Orchestras.  “One thing that I really think sticks out are the people throughout each orchestra,” says Alex. “You work with each other towards one common goal, to play each piece to the best of your abilities during concerts!”

Alex’s passion in art is further exemplified beyond the orchestra room. She is a member of the color guard. She also loves to paint, citing her main mediums as acrylic and watercolor. As an avid traveller, she also enjoys bullet journaling her travels and has been to 24 states.

All in all, it’s safe to say that Alex’s relationship with orchestra has been reciprocal. The orchestra program helped her be more confident, and she pays it forward with her unwavering support to her peers. Congratulations again to Alex, who is an excellent example of one who’s dedication has truly paid off!
