September SOTM: Patrick Cheng

The beginning of the school year marks the revival of another fun orchestra tradition: Student of the Month. Each month, a musician is nominated for their diligence, hard work, and dedication to the orchestra program. Please join us in congratulating junior Patrick Cheng as the first Student of the Month!

Fun Fact: Patrick has an older brother in band!

Patrick began his musical journey in kindergarten playing the piano before picking up the violin in 8th grade. He was inspired to join Arcadia Orchestras this year due to his love for listening to orchestral music (his favorite piece is “A Town With An Ocean View” by Joe Hisaishi!) and perhaps one day, take part in making that music. 

“It’s really inspiring to play with such a big group of people,” said Patrick. “A lot of my friends are in orchestra and I value the community a lot which is why I wanted to experience high school orchestra. It also helps me when I’m composing, too.”

Patrick doesn’t just stop at composing, however. He’s won multiple awards for his musical efforts as well, including the Musical Arts Competition of Orange County (MACOC) Award for piano in 2023 and the PTSA Reflections Award for music composition. 

When asked about what music has taught him, Patrick shared, “Music has taught me to be patient and that I won’t be able to master something immediately after learning it. It is an abstract art form and I’m able to express myself through playing my instruments, not just saying words.” 

Outside of orchestra, Patrick has a variety of other interests as well.

“I love composing and producing music in my free time and I like cleaning around my house too,” said Patrick. “And if I have more free time, I’ll practice violin and piano too.” 

Although this is only his first year in orchestra, Patrick has shown immense amounts of devotion and commitment to both the program and growing as a person within his own musical journey. His timeless effort, enthusiasm, and strong will to keep trying motivates others around him to also continue working hard to achieve their own goals. Congratulations to Patrick on being the first Student of the Month of the year!
