March SOTM: Clinton Wan

Every month, the orchestra students nominate a peer that showcases outstanding musicianship, commitment, and leadership within the orchestra community. Freshman violinist Clinton Wan has been named March’s Student of the Month in recognition of his dedication, enthusiasm, and the positive energy he brings to the orchestra. Despite it being his first year in orchestra, Clinton stands out for his commitment to music and his ability to connect with those around him.

Clinton’s interest in the violin sparked in elementary school, where he first discovered his passion for the instrument. He began playing in fourth grade and was quickly drawn to its flexibility and range, explaining that he “loved the versatility across different pieces from classical music to pop songs.”

In addition, orchestra has become something far more meaningful to Clinton than just an elective. Through his experiences, he has found a strong sense of connection and belonging among his peers, describing music as “not just a class or hobby, but a way to connect with [his] peers through shared experiences.” As a result, Clinton has built lasting friendships through rehearsals, performances, and everyday moments in the orchestra room, making the program an impactful part of his life.

Reflecting on his time in orchestra, some of Clinton’s favorite memories center on the friendships and connections he has made. He fondly remembers the excitement of joining orchestra through events like the eighth grade social, making him feel immediately welcomed. Beyond that, orchestra has offered him many fun experiences, including a memorable time at his middle school field trips–shout out to Mr. Morton from Foothills Middle School!

Besides orchestra, Clinton also enjoys cooking and baking, a hobby he has had since he was seven years old. Furthermore, he enjoys listening to classical KUSC while doing homework or traveling, showing how music remains a constant part of his daily life. He hopes to continue improving in orchestra just as he has in cooking, demonstrating his dedication to growth and learning in all that he does.

Overall, Clinton’s passion, openness, and commitment to both music and community make him a standout member of the orchestra. As he continues to grow, he remains an important and aspiring musician in the program.
