December SOTM: Derek Wang

This month, we’re excited to recognize a dedicated and passionate musician as our December Student of the Month, sophomore cellist Derek Wang from Premier Orchestra!

Derek is a hardworking orchestra student, who joined because of his love for music, and as he puts it, “I didn’t really enjoy the idea of spitting into an instrument for a band, so I chose orchestra.” The decision led him to pick up the cello, an instrument he chose at a young age because his aunt played it and his mom loved the rich sounds it produced.

Derek first picked up the cello in fourth grade, and music has since been a meaningful part of his life. One of his favorite orchestra memories was last year’s New York trip. Through this trip, he shared that he had “met so many people in other orchestras,” making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Outside of the orchestra, Derek stays busy and active. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, basketball, video games, and he also loves playing almost all sports. Derek is also involved in leadership as the Orchestra Council Premier Social Chair, helping bring the orchestra community together.

“I felt very welcomed into orchestra because of Derek and how he was so kind to everyone in orchestra,” said freshman James Valentino. “Not only is he kind and a great leader, but he is also hardworking, which shows because he is in Orchestra Council and even helped cook for the Thanksgiving social. He is definitely a great cello player and I've seen him teach some of the other cellos in his section how to play, which shows his leadership.”

Through years of playing music, Derek has learned valuable lessons beyond sheet music. He describes how “music has taught [him] how to listen to [his] surroundings,” adding that it also helps him unwind and relax. 

We’re so proud to name Derek Wang as our Dec. SOTM and celebrate his dedication, leadership, and love for music. What a strong way to close off the eventful 2025 year!
