To mark the start of an exciting year, the orchestra program welcomed returning and new members with our annual Big/Little social, where new orchestra members (Littles) were introduced to their partners (returning members/Bigs)! The event aimed to enhance our orchestra community and provide a lively atmosphere for students to get to know each other.
To accommodate students' schedules, the social was held at two different times—during lunch and after school. The social featured a variety of icebreakers and bonding activities between the Bigs and Littles: silly question-and-answer sessions, Match the Word, a guess-the-song Kahoot, and a cup stacking relay! The games brought out students’ competitive spirit and teamwork all while having fun.
Students seemed to especially enjoy the guess-the-song Kahoot, as Alice Sun, a freshman in Concert Orchestra, recounted her experience as a Little with great enthusiasm. She described the Kahoot as a highlight of the event, noting that she had “so much fun with [her] bestie Aaron,” who is also her Big. Despite their team finishing last, Alice felt they still “devoured” the competition. She pointed out that her contribution was crucial, given that “all Aaron listens to is Skibidi Toilet” rather than the songs featured in the game. In contrast, Aaron Dai, a sophmore in Symphony Orchestra, appreciated the event from a different perspective. He thought the event was an effective way for the new members to orient themselves into orchestra. Reflecting on his own experience as a freshman last year, he added, “I remember when I was a freshman, my Big, Isaac Leung, helped me get situated with how things worked.” The social was an amazing opportunity for orchestra members to bond and to include new members.
Overall, the Big Little Social was a huge success, marking the start of another amazing year of progress and teamwork in our orchestra program. Chloe Chan, our sophomore representative, encourages us to stay tuned for more Big/Little Socials throughout the year!
